While the old establishment has been gnawing at the fabric of our democracy for the last 10 years, it is now circling, buoyed by a seeming retreat of African intellectuals and a perceived weakening of cohesion within the ranks of the ANC.

Old establishment may not be the most precise way to describe what is essentially a coalition of liberal and right-wing elements in our society. It is a group of people who have failed to accept the legitimacy of our democracy. Perhaps it happened too quickly or was too far-reaching in the transfer of political power.
