Vic: Confusion and anger reigns over Easter trading

The Australian Retailers Association says Victorian traders are angry and confusedabout amended trading restrictions during the Easter break.

The BRACKS government changed the laws in February, banning small businesses from tradingon Easter Sunday, in addition to Good Friday, with breaches now carrying fines of up to$10,000.

The government's also made Easter Saturday a new public holiday, forcing employersto pay staff penalties.

Australian Retailers Association executive director BRIAN DONEGAN says his membershave been very unhappy since the government changed the legislation without consultingthem.

The new laws say only designated businesses with fewer than 20 staff can trade on GoodFriday and Easter Sunday -- although chemists and petrol stations are now exempt.

Festival organisers can also apply for exemptions.

Mr DONEGAN says nobody's quite sure who is going to be open on Sunday.
